Canada’s Miranda Miller and France’s Loic Bruni were crowned downhill champions as the International Cycling Union (UCI) Mountain Bike World Championships concluded in Cairns.

The women’s event was guaranteed to have a different winner to the 2016 event, with Britain’s Rachel Atherton unable to take to the start-line due to breaking her collarbone in training.

Miller stepped up to the challenge, with the Canadian producing a clean run to claimed victory in a time of 4min 10.245sec.

Her time had appeared under threat when Tahnee Seagrave produced the fastest top half of the course, but the Briton crashed out of contention later on.

France’s Myriam Nicole finished narrowly behind the winner’s time, clocking 4:10.342 to take the silver.

The podium was rounded off by Australia’s Tracey Hannah, with the local rider finishing in a time of 4:12.230.

Australia were denied gold narrowly in the men’s event, as 2015 champion Bruni took the world title by finishing in 3:26.656.

The Frenchman edge home favourite Michael Hannah into second place, as the Australian ended his run in 3:26.995.

Aaron Gwin, the World Cup champion, achieved a time of 3:28.623 in the event as the American secured the bronze medal.
