Spain have won the men's rink hockey competition at the World Roller Games in Nanjing following a thrilling final against Portugal.

After sealing their last title in Luanda in 2013, the Spaniards claimed a 17th rink hockey gold medal after winning in a nervy penalty shoot-out.

Spain scored twice in the opening period with Raul Marin firing home first after six minutes before a shot diverted by Jordi Adroher doubled their lead.

Xavi Malian, the Spanish goalkeeper, was in imperious form and kept Portugal at bay throughout the opening period.

Portugal entered the rink after half-time in determined fashion, though, and drew level within less than five minutes.

Helder Nunes halved the deficit before a perfect power-play led Gonçalo Alves to levelling the match.

Spain regained their advantage when Edu Lamas found the back of the net but, with just four seconds remaining, Helder Nunes poked home a rebound to send the contest to extra time.

Diogo Rafael came closest to snatching defeat but the Portuguese's effort rebounded off the post as the contest went to penalties, where Spain eventually prevailed.
