Thomas Derek Grice and Penny Smith came back from a six-hit deficit at the Foxlodge Shooting Range in Russia's capital city.

They eventually beat Spanish duo Antonio Bailon and Beatriz Martinez in the final, 33 hits to 32.

"I tried not to look at the scoreboard," said Grice.

"So to be honest, I actually thought we lost.

"This gold medal is for my grandpa back home, he introduced me to the shooting sport, so it's got to be for him."

Smith won an individual gold medal in New Delhi this season.

"It feels pretty good," she said.

"I think it'll take some time to realise what we've done. 

"I want to dedicate this win to my family, they've been very supportive with me."

United States won the bronze medal after Ashley Carroll and Derek Haldeman beat the second Australian team of Catherine Skinner and Jack Wallace.

The Americans triumphed 41-38. 

The mixed trap will make its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

It came after the ISSF were obliged by the International Olympic Committee to offer an equal number of events for men and women.

Three male only disciplines have been replaced with mixed competitions.
