Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten of the Orica-Scott team sealed victory at the Ladies Tour of Holland to lay down a marker prior to the Road World Championships later this month.

Van Vleuten was in superb form throughout the event and led the general classification stages from the first stage to the last.

The 34-year-old Dutch athlete ended with an overall time of 14 hours 41min 57sec, 43 seconds ahead of nearest challenger and compatriot Anna van der Breggen of the Boels-Dolmans team.

Ellen Van Dijk, who rides for Team Sunweb, rounded off the all-Dutch top three as she was third.

Today's concluding sixth stage, a three lap route of a circuit in Sittard totalling 159.7 kilometres, was won by Alé-Cipollini's Janneke Ensing.

Ensing, also of The Netherlands, soloed away late on to ensure she finished the event, part of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Women's WorldTour, on a positive note.

The key to Van Vleuten's success came in the time trials as she triumphed in the first and third stages.

The win ensures she goes into the upcoming UCI Road World Championships, scheduled to take place from September 17 to 24 in Bergen in Norway, in the best possible form.

"I am super happy and proud of my team and it is also a big relief to finish this off with the win," said Van Vleuten.

"It is my second time that I have taken a big stage race victory and this race I really tried for it from day one.

"It is never easy, it is nerve racking to defend the jersey sometimes but I have been a part of a really great team here.

"Today wasn't easy for our team, we had to ride almost 150km at the front.

"We did it really well and it was good we didn’t burn all our matches too early.

"It has been a really great week for the team."
