The Algerian Olympic Committee has appointed a new head of its Ethics and Deontology Commission ©COA

The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) has appointed a new head of its Ethics and Deontology Commission. 

Abdelhamid Berchiche has been selected for the role by the COA's Executive Board, which is headed by President Mustapha Berraf.

Berchiche is a professor of law and the former Minister of Youth and Sport in Algeria.

The 77-year-old held the political role between 2001 and 2002.

In addition Berchiche is the former rector of the University of Tizi-Ouzou which is located in the east of the north African country.

He led the governing bodies for both karate and tennis in Algeria and was President of the Algerian Football Federation's Disputes Commission until 2009.

Algeria won two silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in August.

Middle distance runner Taoufik Makhloufi claimed both after finishing second in the men's 800 metes and 1,500m.

Capital city Algiers is currently gearing up to host the 2018 African Youth Games.

The African nation will also stage the 2021 Mediterranean Games in Oran.
