Women's top seed Akane Yamaguchi was knocked out as action continued at the Badminton World Federation World Championships in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old Japanese player was ousted by China's ninth seed Chen Yufei at the Emirates Arena in the Scottish city.

Chen won the third round clash 21-18, 21-19 to book her place in the quarter-finals.

Carolina Marin, Spain's reigning back-to-back world champion and the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist, was able to cruise through her match.

Denmark's Mila Blichfeldt had no answer as Marin won 21-7, 21-11 in 36 minutes.

She was joined in the last eight by India's Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu who came from behind to advance.

The Indian, beaten by Marin in the Brazilian city, saw off Ngan Yi Cheung of Hong Kong 19-21, 23-21, 21-17 in a tense battle.

China's fifth seed Sun Yu edged Spain's Beatriz Corrales, coming through 21-11, 19-21, 23-21.

Home interest also continued as Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour battled past sixth seed He Bingjiao of China to reach the quarter-finals.

The Scot triumphed 21-14, 15-21, 21-6.

In the men's draw, China's double Olympic champion Lin Dan came through in three against England's European champion Rajiv Ouseph. 

Lin, seeded seventh, won the third round clash from behind, 14-21, 21-17, 21-16.

Defending world champion and reigning Olympic gold medallist Chen Long, also of China, enjoyed a routine 21-11, 21-10 victory over India's Ajay Jayaram.

South Korea's top seed Son Wan-ho was another to progress thanks to a 21-14, 17-21, 21-13 win over Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk.

China's 10th seed Tian Houwei knocked out France's Brice Leverdez, the man who stunned Malaysia's second see Lee Chong Wei in the first round.

Tian won 21-14, 21-8 to end the Frenchman's run. 

Quarter-final action in the singles competitions will take place tomorrow.
