Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki eased into the third round of the Rogers Cup as she secured a convincing win over Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Aviva Centre in Toronto.

Their match was one of three second round matches to take place today, with Wozniacki triumphing 6-3, 6-0 in one hour.

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina joined the Danish star in the third round, as the number five seed saw off Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.

Barbora Strycova came through a tough three set match against Australia’s Daria Gavrilova, with the Czech player coming from a set down to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

There was disappointment for home favourite Eugenie Bouchard in the first round of the competition, with the Canadian falling to defeat.

Bouchard, a Wimbledon finalist in 2014, has now slipped to 70th in the world and was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Croatia’s Donna Vekic, who will now face third seeded Angelique Kerber in the second round after the German enjoyed a bye to the second round.

Defending champion Simona Halep will begin her campaign tomorrow, with the Romanian set to face Slovakia’s Magdaléna Rybáriková.

Two men’s second round matches took place at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, with Austria’s Dominic Thiem in action.

The third seed was surprisingly beaten 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 by Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman.

Schwartzman will meet the United States’ Jared Donaldson in the third round, with the 20-year-old having beaten France’s Benoit Paire 6-2, 7-5.

Several of the top seeds will make their first appearances at the tournament tomorrow, having received byes.

Canada’s Peter Polansky will take on Switzerland's Roger Federer in one of the most eagerly anticipated matches.

The men’s tournament features on the ATP World Tour, while the women’s competition is part of the WTA tour.
