Turkey has targeted a medal haul of between 15 and 20 at next month's Summer Universiade after confirming their 88-strong team for the event in Taipei.

Kemal Tamer, the head of the Turkish University Sports Federation, told the Anadolu Agency that he "expects" the team to return home with at least 15 medals.

The country's athletes are due to compete in nine disciplines on the Taipei 2017 programme - archery, athletics, fencing, artistic gymnastics, judo, swimming, taekwando, weightlifting and wushu.

Tamer also hopes Turkey can claim their first Universiade medal in swimming at the event, which runs from August 19 to 30.

Turkey, which hosted this year's Winter Universiade in Erzurum, won 16 medals at the last edition of the Summer Universiade, held in Gwangju in 2015.

Their total included two golds, two silvers and 12 bronze.

Berkay Akyol triumphed in the men's 68 kilogram taekwondo competition, with the men's team trap trio of Yavuz Ilnam, Erdinç Kebapçı and Nedim Tolga Tuncer claiming Turkey's other gold medal at the event.

The haul in Gwangju was six less than they achieved at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, where their total of 22 included seven golds.

Turkey has claimed a total of 96 medals from 20 Summer Universiade appearances.

They have participated at every Summer Universiade since the 1977 event in Sofia in Bulgaria.

Events at Taipei 2017 are scheduled to held in venues in Taipei, Keelung, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu.

Around 10,000 athletes from 150 countries are expected to take part at the multi-sport university competition
