The 2017 Junior World Orienteering Championships are set to begin tomorrow as 38 nations descend on Tampere in Finland.

Organisers are anticipating that 177 men and 153 women will take part in the Championships.

The competition is organised this year by Finnish club Koovee, a multi-sports organisation based in the city.

Tampere has several orienteering clubs with "first-class orienteering terrain" promised by organisers.

Competitors are set to encounter terrain varying from hilly city streets in the sprint events to forested hills and steep slopes in the long distance races.

The junior event comes just days after the conclusion of the Senior World Championships in Estonian city Tartu, where Sweden won four out of a possible nine gold medals.

Action in the juniors begins tomorrow with the middle distance qualification events before the finals take place on Tuesday (July 11).

Sprint action then takes centre stage on Wednesday (July 12).

Long distance races are scheduled for Friday (July 14) before the Championships conclude on Saturday (July 15) with the team relay events.
