Slovakia's world road race champion Peter Sagan was fastest in an uphill sprint to win the third stage of the 2017 Tour de France.

The cyclists travelled 212.5 kilometres from Verviers in Belgium to the French town of Longwy.

Proceedings ended in dramatic fashion as Sagan was forced to clip his foot back into his pedal while moving after it came loose as he launched his final challenge with around 300 metres remaining.

Sagan, who rides for Bora-Hansgrohe, managed to quickly recover though and crossed the line in 5 hours 7min 19sec to record the eighth Tour stage win of his career.

The following three riders all posted the same time as Sagan with Australia's Michael Matthews of Team Sunweb finishing in second and Ireland's Daniel Martin of Quick-Step Floors in third.

Belgian Rio 2016 Olympic road race champion Greg van Avermaet of BMC took fourth.

Great Britain's Geraint Thomas of Team Sky retained the yellow jersey after he finished 2sec behind the leaders.

Thomas posted the same time as compatriot, team-mate and defending champion Chris Froome.

Following today's stage, Thomas now has a lead of 12sec over Froome and Matthews.

Team Sky have denied allegations that the jerseys, which featured small dots known as bubble pads, being worn by their riders during the opening stage of this year’s Tour de France were illegal.

According to Reuters, complaints were made by two rival teams, but race jury President Philippe Marien said they did not breach the rules.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with stage four, which will see cyclists travel 207.5km from Mondorf-les-Bains to Vittel.
