Organisers of this year's Wimbledon Championships have confirmed Romania's Ilie Nastase will not be invited into Centre Court's Royal Box during the Grand Slam tournament.

The 70-year-old has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after causing controversy at a Fed Cup tie between his native country and Great Britain last month.

During a pre-match press conference, he was overheard making a comment about the skin colour of the baby women's world number one Serena Williams is due to give birth to later this year, with the American describing the remarks as "racist".

He was also heard asking Britain's captain Anne Keothavong for her hotel room number.

Nastase also lashed out at British journalist Eleanor Crooks for reporting what he had said about Williams' baby.

He was then ejected from the Tenis Club IDU in Constanta the next day after swearing at Keothavong, world number seven Johanna Konta and umpire Jaume Campistol, which eventually led to the match being suspended for 25 minutes.

Speaking today at a press conference, All England Club chairman Philip Brook criticised the behaviour of Nastase, a two-time runner-up at Wimbledon, before confirming he would not be invited into the Royal Box, a privilege the Romanian has experienced at previous tournaments.

"What he did, we have to say his actions were not very good," Brook said.

"We condemn them.

"In terms of an invitation to the Royal Box, he is not going to receive one, I can confirm that."

Richard Lewis, the All England Club's chief executive, added that Nastase could find himself being turned away altogether if he attempts to enter the grounds of the venue.

The ITF are investigating the incidents which took place during the Fed Cup tie.

Nastase posted an apology on his Facebook page, but then appeared to defend his actions during an interview with the BBC, saying Konta should not have tried to speak to the umpire and that Romanians would not think his comments about Williams’ unborn baby were racist.

During today's press conference, it was also confirmed that prize money will total £31.6 million ($40.8 million/€37.4 million), an increase of £3.5 million ($4.5 million/€4.1 million) from 2016.

Winners of the men's and women's singles competitions will each receive £2.2 million ($2.8 million/€2.6 million).
