Leonard, a communications graduate described by the governing body as "one of the UK's leading lights in the field of strategic marketing and business development", had already worked with the World Bowls Board since 2013.

Her role included advising and contributing to the delivery of marketing requirements set out in the organisation's strategic plan, while being mindful of budgetary constraints.

She also project managed the delivery of a website and has provided ongoing advice and support to the Board.

At present, she is a director with Hunter Johnstone Marketing Solutions in Newcastle.

"It's a further extension of our resolve to grow the World Bowls brand and capture the best possible corporate growth from our international potential," said World Bowls President John Bell.

"Claire is one of the top professionals in her field and we're thrilled to have her wealth of talent, dynamism and positivity on the Board."

While making the announcement, Bell also paid tribute to Australia's Colleen Gilbert.

Her term as appointed director concluded last month.
