The Committee for the flagship event, which will take place in Muju in South Korea, staged a taekwondo-themed festival in Gwangwhamunin in the centre of the city.

Interactive booths provided taekwondo-themed activities such as brick-breaking challenges, while the latest taekwondo equipment was on show.

Throughout the day, there were also a number of taekwondo exhibition matches and performances.

Art displays presenting the history of taekwondo were opened.

Rio 2016 Olympic taekwondo players Hye-ri Oh and Dae-hoon Lee were then unveiled as taekwondo ambassadors.

Oh won gold in the women's 67 kilograms event in the Brazilian city, while Lee took bronze in the men's 68kg division. 

In May, one month before the Championships begin, there will be another festival in Jeollabuk-do.

"Every member of the world taekwondo family is looking forward with great anticipation to the 2017 World Championships, our biggest competition ever," said WTF President Chungwon Choue.

"I applaud the great efforts being made by the Muju Organising Committee to communicate our excitement to the general public."

The 2017 World Taekwondo Championships will take place between June 24 and 30.

Action is due to take place at Muju's dedicated taekwondo facility, the 4,500 capacity Taekwondowon. 

It is estimated that there will be 1,900 participants from 170 countries.

Vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Yu Zaiqing is scheduled to attend the Opening Ceremony, while IOC President Thomas Bach plans to make an appearance at the Closing Ceremony.
