International Cricket Council (ICC) bosses have unveiled the main points of the new constitution they want to see introduced by the sport’s national governing body in the United States.

Since June 2015, the USA Cricket Association (USACA) have been serving an ICC suspension, meaning they cannot receive funding from the organisation.

The ban was handed out due to concerns raised over the “governance, finance, reputation and cricketing activities” of the affiliate member, one below Test playing nations.

Since the suspension was placed on USACA, the ICC have been working with the association to get a new constitution put together.

They have now published a draft constitution, which has been ratified by the ICC Board.

Among the main points of the document are splitting the cricketing community in the US into three conference, appointing a trio of independent directors and the holding of an Annual General Meeting.

The constitution was compiled by the ICC’s Sustainable Foundation Advisory Group with input coming from individuals and groups such as the USACA and US Olympic Committee.

“This constitution has been driven by the SFAG with the clear goal of developing a governance model that can unify the sport across the US and provide a platform for cricket to grow and flourish at every level and for the benefit of all stakeholders in the USA,” said Eric Parthen, USA project manager for the ICC.

“We have studied best practices for non-profit sports organisations in the US looking in particular at the US Olympic National Governing Bodies and have applied those principles to a model that works for cricket.

“The result is, I believe, the best opportunity for cricket in the USA the sport has ever had, and it is pleasing to have that assessment endorsed unanimously by the ICC Board.”

The proposed constitution will now be sent to USACA officials, who are set to make a decision on whether to adopt it or not on April 1.

The US cricket team has only ever qualified for one of the top three ICC competitions, reaching the 2004 Champions Trophy held in England.
