A brilliant strike from Vincent Aboubakar in the 88th minute saw Cameroon win their fifth Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-1 victory over Egypt today.

The striker found the net after flicking the ball over a defender and firing home at the Stade de l’Amitie in Libreville, Gabon.

It completed a turnaround for the west Africans after Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny gave Egypt, looking for their eighth title, in the 22nd minute.

Cameroon surged forward after half time as the Pharaohs sat back and tried to defend their slender lead and on the hour mark, Nicolas Nkoulou’s header beat 44-year-old goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary.

This set up an exciting finish as Cameroon continued to pressurise the Egyptians and looked the more likely to find a winner.

Their endeavour was rewarded with just two minutes before the final whistle as Aboubakar showed great skills to get the ball over Ali Gabr on the edge of the penalty area before composing himself to fire past El-Hadary.

It is the first time since 2002 that Cameroon have claimed the title when they beat Senegal in a penalty shoot-out in Mali.

They will now go to the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia later this year, which will help indicate how the country is preparing for the 2018 World Cup which they are hosting.

The Confederations Cup is due to be held between June 17 and July 2.
