London 2017 has launched the education programme of this year's International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships.

Known as "Starting Blocks", the free programme will allow schools across the United Kingdom to get their pupils involved with the pair of sporting events in the capital.

According to London 2017 organisers, Starting Blocks is designed to inspire, motivate and engage young people.

A digital hub will provide free curriculum-linked resources for pupils aged between five and 14, which organisers claim are "specially designed to open young people’s eyes to new opportunities and experiences through classroom activities and whole-school ideas".

Three themes will connect the youngsters to the events: a Summer of World Athletics, The World in One City and Faces of the Summer.

Teaching can cover physical education, as well as maths and English.

Starting Blocks has been developed in partnership with educational consultancy firm EdComs, who are responsible for Get Set, the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association’s youth engagement programme.

Its launch follows London 2017 establishing a ticket scheme to help schoolchildren attend the World Para Athletics Championships at a discounted price.

Organisers also launched a mascot design competition on children's television programme Blue Peter.

Niels de Vos, championship director for both London 2017 events, said: "Following the successful launch of our official schools ticket offer and mascot design competition, Starting Blocks once again demonstrates our commitment to inspire, motivate and engage young people not just in London but around the UK.

“We are proud to be hosting the biggest sporting event in the world in 2017.

"The Championships will be an inspirational summer of world-class sport with a chance for everyone to take part.

"We want the magic of London 2017 to act as an inspiration for young people and I believe both pupils and teachers will benefit from the exciting and topical resources offered by Starting Blocks."

London will become the first city to stage both the IAAF World Championships and the World Para Athletics Championships in the same year.

Action will take place at the now-called London Stadium - the showpiece venue of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The World Para-Athletics Championships are scheduled for July 14 to 23, while the IAAF World Championships are set to take place from August 4 to 13.
