Wout Van Aert recovered from a poor start to retain his men's crown in thrilling fashion today at a muddy International Cycling Union (UCI) Cyclo-Cross World Championships in Bieles, Luxembourg.

The Belgian was marking the latest chapter in an enthralling rivalry with Dutch rival and 2015 world champion Mathieu Van der Poel.

Van der Poel blasted clear on the opening lap as only Belgium's Kevin Pauwels managed to stay in contention.

Van Aert, struggling to find his rhythm, drifted 15 seconds back on the opening lap of the 24.67 kilometres-long course.

Pauwels drifted from contention after suffering a puncture in the mud as the Van der Poul made a solo quest for the line.

Van Aert eventually recovered his form and joined his arch-rival midway through the fourth lap.

But, just when a sprint finish looked in order, Van der Poel also punctured and lost 20 seconds of precious time.

Van Aert was therefore able to coast across the line to win in 1 hour 2min 8sec.

Van der Poel hung for silver 44 seconds back.

Pauwels recovered from his mechanical to take a distant bronze 2:09 behind the leader.

“I really didn’t expect this," admitted Van Aert afterwards.

"I just wanted to give full gas for one hour.

"It’s also a pity that bad luck is with Mathieu when he has a flat tire.

"Of course I couldn’t wait for that.

"I’m so happy with my second world title."
