Peter Shongwe has been elected President of the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) after victory by a single vote in a fiercely contested election in Lobamba.

According to the Swazi Observer, former treasurer Shongwe received 27 votes in comparison with 26 for ex-vice-president Adam Mthethwa.

Shongwe duly replaces Zombodze Magagula after the official stepped-down after 18 years at the helm of the national body.

Pearl Dlamini was elected vice-president while Zakhele Zulu was chosen as treasurer.

Zombodze Magagula, Temangcamane Maseko, Mandisa Sigudla and Zakhele Dlamini were all elected to the SOCGA Board.

This means that 44 per cent of the Board members for the next four years are female.

All 22 SOCGA member associations attended the Annual General Meeting at the OlympAfrica Centre.

The Swaziland Hockey Association was also officially recognised as a SOCGA member during the meeting.

Swaziland has participated at 11 Olympic Games since Munich 1972 but are yet to win a medal.

The country sent a two-strong team of sprinters to last month's Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Phumlile Ndzinisa participated in the heats of the women's 100 metres while Sibusiso Matsenjwa did likewise in the 200m.
