Russell Cheetham led a British one-two finish in the open class as competition resumed today at the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) World Gliding Championships in Australian city Benalla.

Following the cancellation of yesterday’s action, Cheetham flew 557.3 kilometres at 117.0kph to claim the maximum 1,000 points.

Fellow Briton Andrew Davis was second with 965, while home favourite Andrew Georgeson was third with 898.

Cheetham leads the overall standings on 2,989, with Davis second on 2,969 and Germany’s Michael Sommer, 22nd today, third on 2,776.

In the 18 metres class, Germany’s Matthias Sturm took 1,000 points having flown 505.4km at 110.2kph.

France’s Killian Walbrou was his nearest challenger with 989, followed by Britain’s Mike Young with 971.

Walbrou tops the overall standings on 2,895, with the United States’ Sean Fidler second on 2,807 having finished 11th today and Sturm third on 2,791.

Today's action in the 15m class was cancelled due to a mid-air collision involving Australia's Stephen O'Donnell and Germany's Michael Eisele.

Both suffered minor injuries, with the FAI saying they are "okay".

The accident is being investigated.
