The Guatemalan Olympic Committee paid tribute to their Rio 2016 competitors at an event held on "Athletes' Day" in the country.

Twenty-one athletes represented the Central American country at the Olympics in Brazil in August, and they were all awarded their participants' badges and diplomas at the event.

Non-Olympic athletes were also present with 46 National Federations and Associations represented.

The aim of the day was to reward those present for their achievements and commitment throughout the year.

Guatemala's Rio 2016 delegation featured athletes in 10 sports - athletics, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, judo, modern pentathlon, sailing, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

Among their competitors in the Brazilian city was history maker Erick Barrondo, who won the country's first-ever Olympic medal of any colour at London 2012.

The race-walker clinched silver in the men's 20 kilometre event behind China's winner Chen Ding.

In Rio, the 25-year-old could only come home in 50th place, with his London silver remaining as the country's sole Olympic medal after they drew a blank in Brazil.

Sailor Juan Ignacio Maegli did manage to have a successful outing, finishing eighth in the men's laser out of a 46-boat fleet.
