The eighth anniversary of the Portuguese National Paralympic Committee (CPP) was celebrated with an event at the Dom Pedro Palace Hotel in Lisbon.

Among the attendees were several key stakeholders of the CPP, including athletes, members and sponsors of the organisation.

Partners and friends of the Paralympic Movement also attended, according to the CPP, with a special cake made to celebrate the milestone.

The CPP also used the event to thank the sponsors who have supported their efforts in recent years to promote sport for people with impairment in Portugal.

It was acknowledged that since 2008, the membership of the organisation had risen from 10 to 36 organisations.

Portugal were also able to celebrate the medals earned at Rio 2016, with four bronzes achieved in athletics and boccia.

Luís Gonçalves secured the country’s first medal of the Games finishing third in the men’s T12 400 metres.

His success was followed by Fernando Ferreira, Cristina Gonçalves, António Marques and Abílio Valente winning the bronze medal in the mixed team BC1-2 boccia event, before José Macedo achieved the same feat in the BC3 individual competition.

Manuel Mendes secured Portugal’s fourth bronze medal, finishing third in the men’s T46 marathon event.

Mendes’ medal ensured that Portugal would end with one more medal than London 2012, where they secured one silver and two bronze.

At the celebration, sponsors and partners were honoured for their support in the last Paralympic cycle and commitments heading towards Tokyo 2020.

Several Memorandums of Understanding were reportedly signed at the event, including with gambling company Jogos Santa Casa and Joma, Dom Pedro Palace, RTP Sport TV.
