International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) President Ary Graça is due to be re-elected as head of the governing body this week during the organisation’s Congress in Buenos Aires, scheduled to get underway tomorrow.

The Brazilian, first appointed for an initial four years in September 2012, was confirmed as being the only candidate in the running by the FIVB in April.

It came after he had already received "unanimous support" from all five Continental Confederations.

The vote is scheduled to be held on Wednesday (October 5) at the Congress, taking place at the Hilton Hotel in the Argentinian capital.

The 73-year-old is set to be elected for an eight-year term.

A constitutional change introduced at the 2014 FIVB Congress introduced an eight-year first term and a four-year second term for Presidents, a change on the previous system of unlimited four-year terms.

Because Graça was initially elected for just four years, he has been permitted to stand for 12 years the other way around, with the eight-year term coming second.

Ahead of the gathering of the FIVB’s members in Buenos Aires, Graça believes the sport is currently in a "golden era of success" following the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Volleyball proved to be a hit during the Games in the Brazilian city, with the host nation claiming the gold medal in both the men’s beach volleyball and indoor volleyball tournaments.

"The Congress is an opportunity for the global volleyball family to come together," the FIVB President said.

"A chance to reflect, celebrate and look ahead to the future as we continue in the pursuit of our vision to make volleyball the number one family sport entertainment in the world.

"After a spectacular Olympic Games in Rio De Janiero, it is wonderful to be back in South America for the FIVB Congress in Buenos Aires as we mark another important milestone in this special year for volleyball.

"Volleyball is unequivocally in a golden era of success.

"We have just witnessed the most successful Olympic Games where our sport was the signature event and we can look forward to an exciting future with the World Championships in both disciplines taking place in the next couple of years before Tokyo 2020."

The Congress begins tomorrow with a series of workshops for National Federations before its official opening on Wednesday.

Reports on the volleyball and beach volleyball tournaments at Rio 2016 is the first item on the agenda, followed by a review of the FIVB’s activities since the 2014 Congress in Sardinia.

Updates on the 2017 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Austria, the 2018 Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Japan and the 2018 Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria are also due to be given.
