World number 171 Kirill Gerassimenko of Kazakhstan stunned top seed Kenta Matsudaira with a marathon seven game victory to book his place in the quarter-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Czech Open in Olomouc today.

The 19-year-old revelled in what he described as the best win of his career as he clinched a battling 14-12, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9 triumph against the Japanese, who came into the contest as the strong favourite.

Gerassimenko had the better of the early exchanges before Matsudaira, struggling for form as of late, levelled the match by taking the second.

The pair then traded games to send the encounter into a decider and the Kazakh player held his nerve to record a shock victory.

"It was a very good match from my side and to be in the quarter-final is the biggest result of my career so far," he said.

"We had a long talk about the tactics with my coach.

"I knew he had a very fast game and good service."
