Men’s top seeds Mohamed Elshorbagy of Egypt and France’s Gregory Gaultier made light work of their quarter-final opponents at the China Squash Open in Shanghai today to remain on course for a meeting in the final.

World number one Elshorbagy appears to have put his shock second round defeat at last month’s Hong Kong Open firmly to the back of his mind as he secured a straight games win over Mathieu Castagnet.

The French player gave Elshorbagy a stern challenge in each game but the Egyptian emerged unscathed with an 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 victory.

Elshorbagy will now face Borja Golan in the semi-finals after the Spaniard beat Australia’s Cameron Pilley 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4.

Reigning world champion Gaultier proved untroubled by Egypt’s Tarek Momen in the first two games of their match, winning 11-3, 11-5.

He was made to work harder in the third, but ultimately took the game 14-12 to seal victory and a semi-final spot.

Gaultier will face another Egyptian, Karim Abdel Gawad, who won the tightest match of the day 11-9, 11-3, 8-11, 5-11, 11-9 against India’s Saurav Ghosal.

"I’m very happy that I managed to win in five after I was 2-0 up and he managed to come back," said Gawad, the world number six.

"He played some unbelievable squash and is such a great player so all credit to him."

Top seed Laura Massaro enjoyed straightforward progression to the women’s semi-finals, the Englishwoman winning 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 against India’s Joshna Chinappa.

Massaro’s compatriot Alison Waters appeared on course for a shock victory when she claimed the opening game of her match against Raneem El Welily.

The second seeded Egyptian hit back to win the next three games and secure a 9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-4 victory.

El Welily will face Nouran Gohar, who won an all-Egyptian quarter-final match with Salma Hany Ibrahim by a 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8 scoreline.

New Zealand’s Joelle King won her quarter-final match with England’s Sarah-Jane Perry by 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 13-11.

She will now take on Massaro for a place in tomorrow's final.
