A record number of entries have been put forward for the second International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined Youth Cup of the season.

The event in Oberstdorf in Germany will feature 78 boys and 38 girls, across two age categories, on September 3 and 4.

Fifteen countries will be represented at the event, which is also a record for the FIS competition.

Stefan Huber, the secretary general for the event, is impressed with the progress being made.

"The number of entries is sensational, basically we are fully booked," he said.

"It will be a challenge to host competitions with this high number of athletes next to the Summer Grand Prix but the record number of participants also brought a nation record - 15 countries will be on start, which is fantastic.

"We are looking forward to getting started next week.

"Next to the opening barbecue, there will be lots of surprises and activities waiting for the kids, so that the social aspect and entertainment will also play a big role in the weekend."

Oberstdorf was the host of the first-ever Nordic Combined Youth Cup in 2009 and has become a popular fixture on the calendar.

The first Youth Cup event of this season was held in Vuokatti in Finland.

Following a meeting of the FIS Nordic Combined Committee in Cancun in June, it was confirmed that for the first time-ever overall winners for boys and girls will be crowned on the Youth Cup circuit.

Another significant development means it is now be possible for ladies of all ages to compete in a third open class at the Youth Cup weekends.

Nordic Combined - which features ski jumping and cross-country skiing - remains the only discipline on the Winter Olympic programme which is currently male only.

There is also no regular season or any World Cup events for women, but the FIS has targeted eventual Winter Olympic inclusion.
