Uzbekistan won two surprise gold medals on the last day of Rio 2016 boxing action as Shakhobidin Zoirov and Fazliddin Gaibnazarov won the respective men’s flyweight and light welterweight finals at the Riocentro - Pavilion 6 venue.

In the first bout of the day, Zoirov stunned two-time world champion Misha Aloian of Russia to win top honours at flyweight.

The 23-year-old frustrated his opponent throughout and ultimately triumphed by unanimous decision.

"I had a dream, to win the Olympics," said Zoirov.

"That was my goal and I was doing everything to reach that goal.

"Now I'm so happy and make my dream come true.

"Now I want to dedicate this medal to Uzbekistan and its people."

Defeat for Armenian-born Aloian, the London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist and world champion in 2011 and 2013, left him distraught.

Another fighter on the wrong end of an Uzbek upset was Cuban-born Azeri Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo, who was beaten by Gaibnazarov in the light welterweight gold medal match.

The unfancied Gaibnazarov overcame significant height and reach disadvantages to defeat his 31-year-old opponent by split decision.

"I can't express in words how happy I am," he said.

"I can't express the feelings.

"I think it is the happiest day of my life, thank God I won, thank Allah I won."

Beaten semi-finalists Yoel Segundo Finol of Venezuela and China’s Hu Jianguan completed the flyweight podium, while Russia’s Vitaly Dunaytsev and Germany’s Artem Harutyunyan took bronze at light welterweight.

The opening contest of the night saw the United States’ Claressa Shields successfully defend her Olympic women’s middleweight title with a unanimous points win over The Netherlands’ Nouchka Fontijn.

As was the case in the World Championship final in May, Shields proved too strong for her Dutch counterpart and became the first-ever American, male or female, to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in boxing.

Kazakhstan’s Dariga Shakimova and China’s Li Qian were the bronze medallists having lost their respective last-four encounters against Shields and Fontijn.

The last bout of Rio 2016 was the men’s super heavyweight final between Great Britain’s Joe Joyce and world champion Tony Yuko of France with the latter coming out on top on a split decision.

Joyce, 30, appeared to do much more in the ring than Yoka but did not see the result go his way.

Yoka celebrated becoming the first Frenchman to win Olympic super heavyweight gold with his girlfriend and compatriot Estelle Mossely, who won the women's lightweight title on Friday (August 19).

Croatia's Filip Hrgovic and Kazakhstan's Ivan Dychko took the bronze medals as the losing semi-finalists.
