Three multiple Paralympic medallists and world champion Guillaume Ouellet have been named as part of the 24-strong Canada’s athletics squad for Rio 2016, it has been announced.

Brent Lakatos, winner of silver medals in the T53 200 metres, 400m and 800m at London 2012, has been selected, alongside Michelle Stilwell, a three-time Paralympic champion in athletics, who also won gold in wheelchair basketball at Sydney 2000.

Stilwell was Canada’s only athletics gold medallist from London 2012.

They will be joined by Diane Roy, whose five Paralympic medals include four bronze and a silver in the T54 5,000m at Beijing 2008.

Ouellet completes the headline athletes who will represent Canada at the Games in the Brazilian city, due to take place from September 7 to 18.

He will make his Paralympic debut at Rio 2016 and comes into the event as the reigning world champion in the T13 5,000m.

“Our nominated athletes in Para-athletics bring world-class accomplishments and exciting potential to the Rio 2016 Canadian Paralympic Team," Canada's Chef de Mission Chantal Petitclerc said.

"I know that all our athletes and coaches are making the most of these final few weeks of preparation before the Games as they work towards a peak performance in Rio.

“I can't wait to cheer them on at the start line in September."

Canada’s athletics squad returned from London 2012 with nine medals, three of which were claimed by Lakatos.

“I can't wait for Rio,” the multiple world champion and three-time Parapan American Games gold medallist said.

"These are my fourth Paralympic Games, and each one has been so different.

“Athens was a blur, Beijing was bitter disappointment and London was my first taste of the podium.

“This will be the first time I head in as a favourite."

Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, added: “Our Government is a proud supporter of Athletics Canada and our athletes should know that all Canadians are behind them as they go for gold in Brazil."
