Hockey Canada has chosen 85 athletes to take part in the country’s national women’s development and under-18 team selection camps in Calgary ahead of two series against the United States later this month.

A total of 42 players will vie for 23 places on the development team, while 43 will compete for the same amount of spots on the under-18 side.

The selection camp, which is scheduled to be held at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park, is due to run from August 5 to 21.

The development squad will come to the fore from August 5 to 14, where participants will be split into a Red and White team.

They will then play a number of inter-squad friendlies, as well as taking part in off-ice dry land training, fitness testing and classroom sessions before the final team takes on the US in a three-match series in Calgary from August 17 to 20.

Sweden’s national women’s team, and a select number of Canadian Interuniversity Sport players who will be aiming to represent Canada at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, are also expected to be a part of the camp.

Twenty-three players will also form the under-18 squad for their series against the US from August 18 to 21.

Similar activities are planned for the under-18 team, who will be divided into Gold and Blue sides during the selection camp.

“The depth of talent across Canada at the under-18 and development level will be on display in August when we host these 85 players in Calgary,” Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programmes, said.

“When it’s best-on-best competition on the ice it gives the coaching staff a unique opportunity to evaluate the players in both programmes.

“There will be tough decisions to select the top 23 players that will wear the maple leaf when Canada faces off against the United States in the three-game series.”
