The Philippines has hosted an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics educational programme for the first time as nine participants from across South East Asia took part in a National Classifier course in Manila.

The three-day course took place with the backing of the Agitos Foundation and UK Sport, as well as the support of the Philippines National Paralympic Committee, and was led by Genevieve Duff - one of IPC Athletics' most experienced educators.

It aimed to develop the volunteer capacity for national classification throughout South East Asia.

"What I liked about the course is that I got to learn how to fill out the classification card which I am not used to," said Filipino participant Danis.

"Before I thought it wasn't important, but it is.

"Our educator was patiently accommodating all of our queries and answered everything we threw at her.

"I also got to know my strengths and weaknesses in terms of classifying athletes.

"I hope to proceed to international level soon but I know I need to get more exposure and experience as a national classifier."

With a continued rise in the number of Para-athletes and competitions taking place around the world, the demand for officials is also said to be growing.

Consequently, further courses are planned for next year.

The Philippines were represented by nine athletes at the London 2012 Paralympics, which marked the country’s fifth appearance at the Games.

Josephine Medina's fourth-place finish in the women’s individual table tennis class eight competition was the Philippines' best performance.

Powerlifter Adeline Dumapong won the Philippines' first, and so far only, Paralympic medal when she took the bronze medal in the women’s up to 82.5 kilograms event at Sydney 2000.
