Russia’s Margarita Mamun stunned favourite and compatriot Yana Kudryavtseva to clinch the all-around gold medal on home soil at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Kazan today.

Seven-time world champion Mamun produced a superb display to show her team-mate she won’t have it all her own way when the duo go head-to-head for Olympic gold at next month’s Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The 20-year-old, also a winner of four European titles, scored a formidable total of 77.050 to top the podium ahead of Kudryavtseva, who was forced to settle for a rare silver.

Few inside the Gymnastics Center would have expected anything other than a victory for the 18-year-old teenage sensation, who already has 11 World Championships gold medals in her ever-growing collection.

She was widely expected to secure another win to signal her intention ahead of Rio 2016 but she fell comfortably short of Mamun’s total as she could only manage 75.950.

Aleksandra Soldatova completed the podium sweep for the host nation as she took home the bronze with 75.500, which included two impressive scores in the 18.000 range.

Son Yeon-jae of South Korea narrowly missed out on a medal as she finished outside of the medal places.

The result for Mamun will give her a confidence boost with the Olympics looming large on the horizon.

It was only the fifth time in her FIG Rhythmic World Cup career that she had beaten the formidable Kudryavtseva.

“Overall I am satisfied with the performance, of course, there were blots, defects that are normally not visible to the viewer, so on the whole I am satisfied.

“But there are mistakes, so we will work [on them].”
