Los Angeles' bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics has received cross-party support from the United States' House of Representatives.

Bid leaders gathered at the US Capitol in Washington D.C where a bipartisan resolution in support of the Californian city's efforts was announced.

Members of the California Congress were also present at the announcement of an agreement which has been backed by both the Democratic and Republican parties, while more than 100 Los Angeles business leaders were also in attendance.

The Congressional resolution states: “The Congress of the United States expresses the sincere hope that the United States will be selected as the site for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and pledges its cooperation and support toward their successful fulfillment in the highest sense of the Olympic tradition.”

The Los Angeles bid has already received the support of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as a unanimous show of support from the city's council.

A bill of support was also introduced in the California legislature, while the bid is said to boast 88 per cent public backing among Los Angeles residents.

“On behalf of the millions of Angelenos who support LA’s bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, I would like to thank the Congress members for introducing this resolution and for giving their colleagues the chance to show their support," said Los Angeles' mayor Eric Garcetti.

"LA is a city with the Olympics in its DNA, and we are honoured to have been selected as the US bid to bring the Games back to our country for the first time in 28 years.”

LA 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman added: “The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Agenda 2020 stresses the importance of fitting the Games into the long-term vision of the hosts.

"With every show of support we get, we are demonstrating more clearly LA 2024’s alignment with the future of our city, our state and the rest of the United States.

"To us, LA 2024 is an opportunity to welcome the world back to America for a celebration of unity and humanity in the new Los Angeles.”

Budapest, Paris and Rome are also bidding for the 2024 Games.

A decision will be announced by the IOC in Lima next year.
