Russia's wheelchair tennis squad reached the women’s World Group at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup after defeating Italy in the final of the European Qualification tournament at the Kaya Belek Resort Hotel in Antalya.

The Russian team headed into the contest as the top seeded country having won the tournament back in 2014 and appeared in last year’s final.

They reached the qualification match courtesy of a 3-0 win over hosts Turkey and Italy achieved the same scoreline in their tie against Belgium.

Viktoriia Lvova got Russia off to the ideal start by securing a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Italy’s Giulia Capocci in the opening singles tie of the final.

With the junior world number one having triumphed, Ludmila Bubnova had the opportunity to settle the tie when she faced Italy’s Marianna Lauro.

The Russian player took control of the contest, despite losing the first set on a tie-break, to eventually emerge the 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 winner.

The result gave Russia a 2-0 victory and secured their place in the World Group, with the Ariake Colosseum in Japan set to host the event from May 23 to 28.

They join fellow qualifiers Brazil, China and Morocco in the 12-team women’s event, which is being held at the tennis venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 2-1 victory saw Greece join Morocco, China and Colombia in the men’s World Group II, featuring 12-teams at the Ariake Colosseum.

Twelve nations will also compete in men’s World Group, the top tier of competition, while eight teams are set to make up the quad and junior events.
