The Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP) has held its first team meeting ahead of the Rio 2016 Games at the University of Porto.

A full day of activities was held for more than 100 athletes, coaches and officials, as well as representatives from various sporting Federations.

The selection process for Portugal's team will finish in July - ahead of the Olympics which will begin on August 5 - but many who are expected to appear were present.

The aim of the meeting was to promote unity and understanding ahead of the action beginning in the Brazilian city.

Three former Olympians gave presentations to the group, including Olympic bronze medal winning sailor Nuno Barreto who came third in the 470 class at Atlanta 1996.

He was joined by another sailor, Mariana Lobato, and judoka Telma Monteiro.

A media training session was also held and a presentation made by Chef de Mission Jose Garcia.

Garcia, a three-time canoeing Olympian, also won a World Championship bronze medal in Plovdiv in 1989.

Portugal will be hoping to improve on their disappointing London 2012 Olympic performance in Rio, where they will be competing in a country which shares their language.

In the British capital they won a solitary silver medal, which went to canoeists Fernando Pimenta and Emanuel Silva in the men's 1,000 metres K2.

More meetings will be held before the action in Rio begins.
