Norway's Kjetil Jansrud overhauled the first-run lead set by his compatriot Aksel Lund Svindal to claim International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup glory in the Alpine Combined in Wengen today.

The 30-year-old Olympic Super-G champion recorded the third fastest downhill at the Swiss resort, clocking 1 min 49.00 sec to finish 0.90 behind Svindal, who was quickest to finish in 1:48.10.

He made up the time during the slalom run though with a blistering 48:61, and although Svindal was second in the discipline in 49:55, Jansrud had done enough to win with an overall time which was just 0.4 sec faster.

"You're at the start and you try and push it," said Jansrud.

"That's what I did, you have to be aggressive going in, but I never know what to expect.

"His [Svindal] slalom run was far from perfect, especially in the last pitch, but he managed to stay in the race.

"I think I pulled off a pretty good run on the top and the middle section and suddenly I kicked off in the last third there and I felt like I wasn't going to save it, but somehow I found my new outside ski and managed to fight my way to the bottom.

"That made me quite surprised when I came in and saw the green light, so that was a happy moment.

"It's pretty sweet."

Frances' Adrien Theaux registered the second quickest downhill in 1:48.82 but his slalom of 48:92 pushed him down to third overall.

The victory was Jansrud's second in the World Cup this season after he also triumphed in the Parallel Giant Slalom in the Italian resort of Alta Badia in December.

Austria's World Cup leader Marcel Hirscher, the winner of the last four overall titles, was not in action today which allowed Svindal to cut his lead at the top of the standings.

Hirscher has 801 points with Svindal now on 716, ahead of slalom specialist compatriot Henrik Kristoffersen who has 571.

The Wengen leg of the World Cup continues with a downhill competition tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the women's World Cup season continued with a second successive slalom victory for Slovakia's Veronika Velez-Zuzulová in Flachau, Austria.

After winning her first race of the season at the resort on January 12, the 31-year-old repeated the trick in a time of 1:49.99.

Sweden's Frida Hansdotter was second, 0.20 adrift, with third place going to another Slovakian, Petra Vlhova who timed 1:50.52.

World Cup leader Lara Gut still tops the standings with 738 points, with the Swiss not competing in the slalom.
