Home favourites Alexander Payer and Sabine Schoeffmann today secured Austria’s first-ever victory in an International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Snowboard World Cup mixed-team event after winning the parallel slalom race in Bad Gastein.

Having beaten their higher-ranked compatriots Benjamin Karl and Julia Dujmovits in the quarter-finals, Payer and Schoeffmann went on to defeat Germany’s Stefan Baumeister and Selina Joerg in the final.

Success earned Payer his maiden World Cup win, and saw Schoeffmann follow up her third-place finish in yesterday’s women’s parallel slalom in style.

It also meant Austria became the third country after Italy and Switzerland to win a team parallel slalom, an event which made its debut on the World Cup calendar last year.

Payer defended the small lead Schoeffmann had handed him in the final, but it was during the semi-final against Olympic champion Vic Wild of Russia where the 26-year-old impressed most.

Despite finding himself behind, Payer fought back to secure a narrow win and a place in the final.

"Alex definitely earned us the final," said Schoeffmann.

"He rode very well.

"It's nice to share this victory with such a great team-mate."

Payer, whose first World Cup podium came in the Italian resort of Carezza in December 2013, added: "It was a special race.

"From the very beginning I enjoyed it thanks to a great partner.

"We grew up together and have been riding together since we have been little kids.

"This is something special."

Wild and Russian wife Alena Zavarzina finished third after winning the small final at the expense of Switzerland’s Dario Caviezel and Julie Zogg.

The next Alpine Snowboard World Cup event is a parallel giant slalom, scheduled for Rogla, Slovenia on January 23.
