Australia’s Alistair Young has built a commanding advantage in the boy’s Laser Radial class at the Youth Sailing World Championships after claiming victories in both races on day two of the regatta at Langkawi, Malaysia.

The national champion was the overnight leader having earned a victory and fourth place yesterday, but he was able to produce an even better display to dominate the field and further extend his overall lead.

With his fourth currently discarded, Young leads on three points ahead of the United States’ Nicholas Baird and Finland’s Oskari Muhonen, who occupy the remaining podium positions on 11 and 12 points respectively.

Poland’s Magdalena Kwasna, meanwhile,  also retained her overnight lead in the girl’s class after moving onto a total of five points after a victory and third place, with Hungary’s Maria Erdi lying four points behind in second.

After a disastrous first day in which they finished 13th and 17th, Austria’s Angelika Kohlendorfer and Viktoria Puxkandl began trying to rectify the damage as they claimed the two race wins in the girl’s 420 classification.

Their stunning performances elevated them to fifth in the standings on 15 points, but they are still 10 adrift of Australia's Nia Jerwood and Lisa Smith, runners-up behind the Austrians in both races.

Consistency is proving key in the boy’s event as despite having failed to win a race on the first two days America’s Will Logue and Bram Brakman currently top the standings on six points.

The early leaders Alec Brodie and Xavier Winston Smith were unable to maintain their level of performance after sixth and ninth place finishes saw the Australians drop to second, two points behind their rivals.

Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic gold medallist Francisco Saubidet Birkner is now forced to share the leadership of the boy's RS:X class after he could only manage one second and two four place positions.

It allowed Titouan Le Bosq to move level with the Argentine on 12 points, but the Frenchman’s higher discarded score could prove a factor later on in the regatta should he suffer another poor result.

Russia’s Stefania Elfutina edged two points clear of China’s Xian Ting Huang in the girl’s event.

Norwegian brothers Tomas and Mads Mathisen claimed the outright lead in the boy’s 29er competition after opening up a two-point lead on New Zealand’s Jackson Keon and Nick Egnot Johnson.

Finland’s Sirre Kronlof and Veera Hokka are in pole position in the girl’s class on 15 points.

After a shipping delay prevented the SL16 sailors from taking to the water yesterday they were able to have a training round, with competition now scheduled to begin on tomorrow and the rest day on New Year’s Day will be used to catch up on missed races.
