The Swedes, who eased to victory in their opening match over Angola in Group B yesterday, trailed 4-1 and 5-2 in the early stages at the Næstved Arena before finding their rhythm, levelling proceedings at 8-8 in the 18th minute.

Johanna Bundsen led the way with a superb goalkeeping performance as the Swedes gradually pressed home their advantage.

With three minutes to go they led 31-28 before two Polish goals ensured a nail-biting finish.

Poland will take solace from their comeback despite the disappointing result, with the team hoping to improve upon their fourth place finish two years ago in Serbia.

Denmark, the hosts who beat Poland in that bronze medal match, continued their good form with a 32-20 Group A win over Tunisia today at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, pressing ahead after taking a 16-10 half-time lead.

Also in Group A, Montenegro and 2013 runners-up Serbia each also won after their draw yesterday.

The Serbians overcame Hungary 32-26 after recovering from 10-4 down in the 12th minute, while Montenegro battled past a spirited Japan 29-37.

Neither of the other Group B battles were anything like as close as the Swedish and Polish duel.

The Netherlands inflicted a second heavy defeat on Angola, winning 37-24, while China overpowered Cuba 39-30.

Action is taking place across the four cities of Herning, Næstved, Kolding and Frederikshavn, with each of the four groups based in a different city.

Matches will resume in Group C and D tomorrow following a rest day today.
