Cuba celebrated another sensational day in the AMBC American Confederation Boxing Championships as all 10 of their boxers advanced to the finals in Vargas, Venezuela.

Light flyweight Joahnys Oscar Argilagos Perez, Cuba’s youngest team member at 18 years of age, started the incredible run of success with a composed performance against United States teenager Nico Hernandez.

Yosbany Veitia bounced back from his flyweight gold medal match defeat at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games to beat Colombia’s Ceiber David Avila, while International Boxing Association (AIBA) world champion Lazaro Alvarez triumphed at lightweight against Puerto Rico’s Jose Javier Rosario.

Julio Cesar La Cruz overcame Colombia’s Juan Carrillo at light heavyweight, before one of the best Cuban performances was produced by Erislandy Savon, who was powerful, fast and accurate against Brazil’s Juan Nogueira in the heavyweight class.

The other Cuban finalists are made up of bantamweight Andy Cruz, light welterweight Yasnier Toledo, welterweight Roniel Iglesias, middleweight Arlen Lopez and super heavyweight Leinier Pero.

Elsewhere on the fifth day of competition, Venezuela’s youngest boxer Yoel Finol maintained his winning ways at flyweight, eliminating Costa Rican David Alejandro Jimenez.

His compatriot Luis Cabrera didn’t have the same joy at lightweight however as he was outpointed by Brazil’s Robson Donato Conceicao, who goes on to face Alvarez in a repeat of the 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships final in Almaty.

Puerto Rico’s Danielito Zorrilla, the Central American and Caribbean Games silver medallist, reached the light welterweight final after an outstanding performance against Venezuela’s Luis Arcon, whose fellow countryman Gabriel Maestre suffered a surprise defeat against Argentina’s Alberto Ignacio Palmetta at welterweight.

Maestre, the AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist and Toronto 2015 Pan American Games champion, lost by split decision to Palmetta, who goes on to face London 2012 Olympic champion Iglesias after the Cuban eliminated Mexico’s Marvin Cabrera.

There was also a superb win for Mexico’s Joselito Velasquez over Dominican Republic’s Victor Daniel Santillan at light flyweight.

The 10 gold medal bouts are scheduled to take place on the sixth day of competition tomorrow.
