Azerbaijan ended the Baku 2015 European Games boxing test event in style as they claimed seven gold medals on the final day of competition here today.

After their boxers put on a dominant display in the afternoon, topping the podium in four weight divisions, they managed to maintain that level to the delight of the crowd, who provided the week’s best atmosphere at the Great Silk Way Elite Boxing Tournament.

Flyweight star Elvin Mamishzada, who looked in fluent form throughout the tournament, got proceedings off to a blistering start with a composed performance against Kazakhstan’s Azamat Issakulov which gave him a split decision triumph, a result greeted with rapturous applause.

Elvin Isayev then built on Mamishzada’s success by cruising to a unanimous victory over Nurbol Kalzhanov of Kazakhstan, displaying a vast array of counter-attacking punches that saw him take the lightweight title in confident style.

They did not quite have it all their own way though as Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan was utterly dominant in his super heavyweight win against home favourite Kamran Mehdiyev as he claimed victory with a unanimous judges verdict.

The other gold available in the evening went to Radoslav Pantaleev, who was also on the right side of a 3-0 scoreline against Turkey’s Cem Karlidag in the light heavyweight decision.

The hosts monopolised the afternoon session, nearly claiming a clean sweep of the medals available as they exhibited their boxing prowess once more.

Tayfur Aliyev took the bantamweight title thanks to a split decision victory over highly-fancied Frenchman Samuel Kistohurry in what was a fascinating contest, with the verdict causing some raised eyebrows from the visiting team.

Aliyev’s success was then followed up by Cuban-born Lorenzo Sotomayor, who danced the famous “Ali shuffle” during his semi-final win yesterday, as he also proved too strong for a French boxer by beating Hassan Amzile in unanimous fashion.

It was a relatively cagey affair in the light welterweight gold medal match but Sotomayor did just enough to take the win to the delight of the home crowd.

Khaybula Masalov maintained the fruitful afternoon for the Azerbaijani boxers with a split decision victory over Yerik Alzhanov of Kazakhstan in the middleweight division, before Teymur Mammadov justified his favourites tag by cruising to a 3-0 win against Turkey’s Seyda Keser.

The hosts had already clinched a gold medal before competition on the last day began as Cem Karlidag of Turkey failed to complete a medical inspection, which handed the welterweight title to Tamerlan Abdullayev.
