Ben Nunoo-Mensah cited personal reasons in a letter to the GOC on Monday (March 10) for his decision to quit.

The GOC's secretary general Richard Akpokavie said in a statement to GhanaWeb that the decision "came as a shock to the entire GOC family, given the centrality of Mr Nunoo-Mensah in the planning for Glasgow 2014".

An extraordinary meeting of the GOC will be held in the next few days to discuss the resignation.

"In the interim, [we] would like to assure friends, well-wishers, supporters, and all stakeholders in the preparation towards the Commonwealth Games, that the GOC is taking various steps to ensure that Ghana's preparations towards the Commonwealth Games are not adversely affected," added Akpokavie.

The GOC has contacted the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the Commonwealth Games Planning Committee, Glasgow 2014, the High Commission of the UK, and other stakeholders since the resignation of Nunoo-Mensah.

Discussions are ongoing as the GOC looks to secure a pre-Games training site ahead of Glasgow 2014, which begins on July 23 and ends on August 3.
