February 26 - New deal with EE aims to make Wembley one of the most connected stadiums in the world ©Getty Images Wembley National Stadium Limited today announced a six-year partnership deal with EE which sees the communications firm named as its first ever lead brand partner.

The new agreement is not a naming rights deal with owners the Football Association (FA), who insist  "the historic and world-renowned name of the stadium will remain", but the partnership will be referenced across all channels for both parties as Wembley Stadium connected by EE.

The aim of the partnership - which will start immediately with the Capital One League Cup Final between Manchester City and Sunderland on Sunday (March 2) - is to make Wembley one of the most "technologically advanced stadiums" in the world, according to the FA.

The 90,000 seater arena in North West London is set to benefit from a multi-million pound investment in its technological infrastructure over the course of the six-year partnership, which will see the implementation of a "technology road map" providing enhanced 4G coverage, super-fast Wi-Fi and mobile payment solutions to fans attending the stadium.

A free app available to download on Android and Apple devices will also be launched, which will aim to offer fans a dynamic feed of event content as well as Stadium and travel information.

Commenting on the new agreement, Wembley chairman Melvin Benn said: "We have been looking for the right partner to help us make sure that Wembley maintains its reputation for being one of the best sport and entertainment venues on the planet.

"As stadia around the world become increasingly more technologically advanced, EE is the perfect partner to assist us in fulfilling that goal, giving event owners and their fans the best possible and unforgettable shared experiences."

As part of the partnership, EE will also become a supplier to the England men's senior team and The FA Cup.

"We are extremely proud to announce our partnership with Wembley Stadium," said EE chief executive Olaf Swantee.

"At EE, we are always looking for new ways to enhance digital lives across the UK and this ground-breaking deal allows us to extend the same vision and passion to the country's national Stadium.

"Over the coming months, we will announce an exciting programme of upgrades and innovations to the existing infrastructure at Wembley that will ensure the stadium offers visitors a world-class spectator experience for many years to come."

Wembley Stadium marked its 90th anniversary last year and has been the home of the FA Cup Final since 1923, as well hosting the majority of England international home matches.

It also hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as football, athletics, equestrian and field hockey events during the 1948 London Olympic Games, and staged the London 2012 Olympic football gold medal match.

In 2000, the old Wembley Stadium was closed and demolished in 2002 before reopening in 2007 after being totally rebuilt at a cost reported to be £757 million ($1.26 billion/€922 million).
