Simon BallMay 27 - Simon Ball, the deputy chairman of Cable and Wireless Communications, has joined the Board of Commonwealth Games England (CGE) as a non-executive director.


Ball, who is also a non-executive director at the Allied Irish Bank Group and chairman of the audit committee at Tribal Group, has over 30 years of financial strategy experience.

He has previously served as in numerous senior roles including finance director at 3i Group plc, director general of finance at the Department for Constitutional Affairs - now the Ministry of Justice - and finance director at Robert Fleming Holdings.

"Following the successes of the London 2012 Olympics, the team at CGE is setting itself an ambitious agenda for England's representation at Glasgow 2014," said Ball.

"Being given the opportunity to help deliver success at those Games and to shape England's future Commonwealth Games participation is both a personal privilege and an exciting challenge."

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and a member of the Securities Institute, Ball was one of a number of applicants for the position on the CGE Board.

The Board is chaired by Sir Andrew Foster while it also consists of former England netball captain Karen Atkinson, Arsenal Football Club marketing director Angus Kinnear, sports business consultant Hamish McInnes, Speedo International President David Robinson, Carphone Warehouse Group co-founder David Ross, former PricewaterhouseCoopers senior partner Joe Ryan, communications expert Martin Thomas and C&C Alpha Group executive director Bhanu Choudhrie.

Ball is the tenth member and Sir Andrew has welcomed him to the organisation.

"I am delighted to announce that Simon has joined our Board as a non-executive director and am very pleased to have secured such a top quality candidate for the position," said the CGE chairman.

"Simon brings a wealth of experience to our Board that I am sure will prove invaluable as we continue our preparations for Glasgow 2014 and beyond."

Ball's appointment comes shortly after former British Olympic Association (BOA) chief executive Andy Hunt was appointed special advisor to the CGE Board.
