Cundy 12_FebFebruary 11 – Britain continued their superb display at the 2012 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles as they claimed six medals, four of which were gold, on day three of the competition at the Velodrome at the Home Depot Centre.

Multiple world and Paralympic champion Darren Kenny led the way for the team as he stormed to victory in the C3 1 kilometre time trial in 1min 12.496sec to take his second medal of the competition.

Jody Cundy (pictured above and below) continued the gold rush in the C4 1km time trial as he posted a winning time of 1:06.001.

This was no major surprise, given that Cundy remains unbeaten in the event since 2006, although he admitted that he had to push himself to the limit to secure victory.

"It's pretty tough out there," he said.

"I don't know what it is, whether it's the air con or if weather conditions have changed, but you just don't have the same sensation of speed that we had here when we arrived.

"Still, I'm quite happy to come away with less than a second outside my PB (personal best) and a lot of good data to take away.

"It will be good to go to London [for the 2012 Paralympics] as world champion."

The most electrifying ride of the day came from defending C5 kilo world champion Jon-Allan Butterworth when half way through the time trial, the British rider saw his world record broken by China's Xingyang Liu.

But Butterworth responded with a brilliant time trial to smash Liu's brand new world record with a time of 1:07.212 and clenched gold in his favourite event.

"When I was going up there [to the track] I was thinking, right, I have to pull something special out of the bag, but as soon as I was on the start line I knew what I had to do," he said.

"In the ride I was fighting every single yard."

Britain's final victory of the day came from Sarah Storey in the C5 3km pursuit as she raced to her second gold of the competition.

In other events, Mark Colbourne won silver in the C1 kilo and Shaun McKeown picked up bronze in the C3 Kilo.

Meanwhile, the Irish team missed out on the medals on day three but managed to secure three top ten places.

Colin Lynch was the standout performer and set a new Irish record of 1:19.245 in the C2 1km time trial which left him in fourth overall.

Enda Lynch finished seventh in a time of 1:15.593 in the C3 1km time trial.

Cathal Miller finished sixth in a time of 1:10.670 in the C5 1km time trial.

The four-day competition is the final qualifying event for the Paralympic Games.
