para olympic-ivillageFebruary 4 - ParalympicsGB took another important step in their preparations for London 2012 after they were given their first look at the Paralympic Village.

The visiting party consisted of the ParalympicsGB leadership team, the team leaders from all 20 Paralympic sports and senior staff from the British Paralympic Association (BPA).

Britain is the first team to inspect the Paralympic Village – situated adjacent to the Olympic Park in Stratford.

The delegation was given an explanation of how the facility has been made accessible for athletes with a disability.

They were also told how the Village has been designed to help athletes feel at home during the biggest sporting events of their career.

"This session with the key players was very positive and successful, and we can all be very proud of what we delivered and achieved," said ParalympicsGB Chef de Mission Craig Hunter.

"It was a great team effort and representative of the dedicated and considered approach that we are taking."

It marked a big week for Hunter, who during the tour of the Paralympic Village, announced that he had appointed former chief executive of the Commonwealth Games England, Ann Hogbin, as the Deputy Chef de Mission for operations.

The appointment completes the senior executive team for ParalympicsGB with Hogbin joining a four-person staff consisting of Hunter, Penny Briscoe, the deputy Chef de Mission for performance, and Caroline Searle, the chief press officer.

All four stated that they were impressed with the Paralympic Village, as did the team leaders from the 20 Paralympic sports including UK Athletics Paralympic head coach Peter Erikssen.

"It is really important for us to have had this chance to see the Village and get a feel for its location," said Erikssen.

"It felt like the right setting for our athletes to prepare well for the Games and it made me feel like we are ready."

The visit to the Paralympic Village followed a briefing from the BPA which updated key representatives of the 20 Paralympic sports with details of the extensive planning and preparation that is taking place to ensure that ParalympicsGB is well prepared for the Games, which opens in just over 200 day's time.

"Today was a really important moment in our preparation for the Games and it is really significant in building our one-team approach," added BPA chief executive Tim Hollingsworth.
