The newly-completed Hydro could host netball during the 2014 Commonwealth Games in GlasgowOctober 18 - Netball's venue at next year's Commonwealth Games could be switched to the newly-built Hydro, which would mean more tickets would be available for what is expected to be one of the most popular sports at Glasgow 2014.

Netball is currently due to be held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), along with boxing, judo, wrestling and weightlifting.

The £125 million ($203 million/€148 million) Hydro, whose distinctive elliptical sloping shape is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman amphitheatres according to the designers, was officially opened last month and is Scotland's largest entertainment venue.

The Hydro is located within the SECC, which is located on the banks of the River Clyde and is one of Scotland's most visited venues.

The precinct already boasts the large-scale SECC Exhibition Halls and the famous Clyde Auditorium -  more popularly known as the "Armadillo" due to its overlapping, shell-like structure.

One plan being considered by Glasgow 2014 is for the early stages of the netball competition to be played in the SECC as planned with the semi-finals and medal matches taking place in The Hydro.

Scottish officials are investigating whether that would fit in with gymnastics, which is also due to take place at The Hydro.

"Glasgow 2014 strives to maximise the use of our venues so that the athlete experience is optimised by packed stadia throughout our sport programme," a spokesman for Glasgow 2014 told insidethegames.

"The current plan is to hold the netball finals in the SECC.

"Glasgow 2014 has committed to conduct an operational feasibility assessment to see if it is possible to host the netball finals in the SSE Hydro.

"Any decision to change from our current position will be taken in early 2014."

The change of venue could lead to 4,000 more tickets being made available for netball.

The sport is expected to be one of the highest quality events at the Commonwealth Games.

The world's top 18 ranked teams are all eligible to compete at the Games.

New Zealand currently head the rankings ahead of Australia and England.
