September 8 - Olympic diving champion Daley gets a bird's eye view of GlasgowHundreds turned out today to see Olympic diving bronze medallist Tom Daley abseil along the banks of the River Clyde before meeting with enthusiastic fans at the historic Fruitmarket in the centre of Glasgow as the ticket programme for the 2014 Commonwealth Games enters its final week.

In his role as a Glasgow 2014 Ambassador, the 2009 world champion attended a special event in the city where fans got to see the 19-year-old get a bird's eye view of the Scottish city as he abseiled from the Finnieston Crane along the banks of the famous Glasgow waterway.

Presented with a kilt by Shawlands Academy pupil, Aamir Mehmood, Daley tried on the traditional Scottish garment before appearing at the Fruitmarket in the city centre where he met with fans and spoke about his hopes for the Games next year, which run from July 23 to August 2, and revealed his other sporting interests which include badminton, rugby sevens and gymnastics.

Daley, who won double diving gold at Delhi 2010, also took part in a game of bowls with veteran Commonwealth champion Willie Woods at Glasgow 2014 venue Kelvingrove.

"I really loved my first experience of Glasgow today - abseiling from the Finnieston Crane was incredible, I met hundreds of my fans in the Fruitmarket and I had a go at playing Lawn Bowls at the Kelvingrove venue," said Daley afterwards.

"What a friendly city.

"What a welcome.

"It's obvious that the atmosphere here for the Games will be awesome and I can't wait to be part of it all.

"I know there's just one week for people to get their ticket applications in and I'd urge everyone to be part of this once in a lifetime event.

"Today was just a taste of what's to come next year and I'm really excited to come back to defend my Commonwealth title in front of a brilliant home crowd."

Clyde, the official Glasgow 2014 mascot was also on-hand to meet Daley, along with his creator 13-year-old Beth Gilmour from Cumbernauld.

In total, competition across 17 sports will take place during 11 days of action in Glasgow, and the four-week ticketing phase closes at 6pm on Monday September 16.

"Tom's the prefect ambassador to inspire young people about sport and help us get everyone involved in the UK's next major sporting celebration," said chief executive of Glasgow 2014, David Grevemberg.

"It has been great to welcome him to Glasgow and to see the warm welcome he has received this weekend and what he can look forward to in 2014."
