cgf cocomOctober 11 – Canada's Bruce Robertson, the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission for Glasgow 2014, has praised the Organising Committee as it gears up to host the biggest ever sporting event in Scotland's history.

Robertson's Commission was conducting its third inspection visit of Glasgow and examined all elements of the preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

The trip included visits to key venues for the Games including the newly opened Emirates Arena, which will host the Glasgow 2014 track cycling and badminton competitions.

"The fact that a number of venues are either completed or are nearing completion provides the CGF with significant confidence in the ability of Glasgow to deliver a successful Games," said Robertson, who is also the CGF vice-president.

"The infrastructure projects are being well managed by Glasgow City Council and the planning now being done by the Organising Committee to adapt venues for Games time use is well on track.

"These new venues are of a high standard and along with the existing venues, provide an excellent platform to stage the Games.

"More significantly, the venues provide wonderful community legacy and it is already evident how transformational some of the facilities will be for the Glasgow community."

Robertson admitted that the Commission was particularly impressed by the Athletes' Village development, which he said had the potential to be the "best ever" in the history of the Games.

"The housing development and regeneration programme in the east end of Glasgow is a wonderful example of the Commonwealth Games helping build communities," he said.

"The development is well advanced, with many houses already in place 21 months out from the Games.

"The Village has the potential to be the best ever and a tremendous credit to Glasgow.

"It really will provide a home away from home for the athletes."

The Commission chairman added that Glasgow 2014 has massively benefited off the back of London 2012, which will be a big boost to all involved in the Games.

"The interest in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games received a positive boost during and after the London Olympic and Paralympic Games," he said.

"Already 250,000 people are engaged with the Games through Glasgow 2014's social media platforms even before real promotion has started.

"With so much good work done, and good will across the political landscape, it is important for all to resist any distraction over the next 20 months.

"Now is the time for absolute focus and commitment to the end result to benefit all of Scotland."

Robertson's comments have unsurprisingly been welcomed by Glasgow 2014 chairman Lord Smith.

"It is a great credit to the hard work of the team at the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and to our partners, the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and Commonwealth Games Scotland to hear the CGF talk of the confidence it has in all of us to deliver a great and transformational Games," he said.

"We value its recognition that the standard of all our venues is exceptionally high and that they create excellent platforms from which the great athletes of the Commonwealth can compete at the highest levels.

"Equally welcome, is recognition of the wider positive impact these Commonwealth Games are already having - and will continue to have - not just in Glasgow but right across Scotland.

"There is no doubt the experience of London 2012 has set the benchmark high in the eyes of athletes of the Commonwealth and millions of people utterly absorbed in an extraordinary summer of sport.

"Without doubt there is great excitement at the prospect of a Commonwealth Games in Scotland in less than two years' time.

"We as an Organising Committee and as Game Partners are excited at the prospect of delivering an outstanding Games for Glasgow, for Scotland and for the Commonwealth.

"There is a great deal of work still to be done and there is no sense of complacency on our part at the scale of the task ahead but we are in an excellent position.

"We are on time, on budget and on course and we look forward to sharing with the next stage of the journey to delivering a history-making Games of which the CGF, Scotland and Glasgow can be proud."
