July 8 - Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar has helped open a the new wrestling stadium built for the Commonwealth Games, which is due to open on October 3.



The arena has been named after Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who was India’s first individual Olympic medallist after the country earned its indpendence from Britain.

The KD Jadhav Stadium, located at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium complex, was inaugurated by Sports Minister M.S. Gill, who dedicated the stadium to Jadhav who won the wrestling bronze medal at the 1952 Olympic Games at Helsinki.

Gill, said it was appropriate that the achievement of Jadhav were recognised.

He said: "Shri Jadhav will always be remembered as the winner of independent India’s first individual Olympic medallist.

"We are all aware of his achievement."

Kumar, who won the bronze medal in the freestyle 66 kilograms category in Beijing two years ago, said: "We are happy that the stadium has been named after great K. D. Jadhav.

"It will motivate us to win laurels for our country.

"We are training hard for the Commonwealth Games and we are hoping a good show."
