June 4 - Commonwealth Games organisers in New Delhi began selling tickets today with the promise that they will be affordable and accessible for everyone.

New Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna received the first ticket for the Games, which are due to open on October 3, from organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi at an elaborate ceremony in the capital.

"The Commonwealth Games are your opportunity to explore your passion and enthusiasm for sports, especially when a number of our athletes are pegged to be medal winners in a range of sports," Kalmadi told the audience.

The most expensive tickets will be for the opening and closing ceremonies at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, ranging from 1,000 rupees (£14/$21) to 50,000 rupees (£691/$1,000).

Prices for the sporting events range from 50 rupees (£0.69/$1) to 1,000 rupees (£14/$21), while there will be free entry to four events: marathon, walk, cycling road race and cycling time trial.

Kalmadi said: "The tickets are reasonably priced.

"Rupees 50 is the minimum ticket.

"Any ticket holder can go free by public transportation.

"And, I am grateful to the Government of Delhi for having waved aside entertainment tax.

"No entertainment tax on this ticket, that is why we could have the prices so low."

The tickets will be available at more than 50 outlets of Central Bank of India and Hero Honda showrooms.

The sale process will be done three phrases from June 1 to July 31, August 1 to September 31 and the Phase-III will begin just before the Games on October 1.
