May 5 - Victoria Ohuruogu (pictured), the sister of Olympic 400 metres champion Christine, has been selected to lead Britain's team for the forthcoming European Youth Olympic Trials in Moscow later this month, the event which will act as the qualification for the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Ohuruogu, who stepped up from 300m to 400m this year and proceeded to win the England 400m indoor Under-20 Championships, will travel to the Russian capital, as part of a 22-strong team.

Ohuruogu, 17, only started training seriously in August 2006 but has made rapid progress after initially starting at the Newham Sports Academy set-up by 1984 Olympic javelin champion Tessa Sanderson, who has tipped her to run alongside her sister at London 2012.

Ohuruogu, who is one of nine children, is now working with Lloyd Cowan, the coach who guided Ohuruogu to glory in Beijing and the 2007 World Championships title, and will be hoping for a good performance in Moscow where the top five in the 400m will qualify for Singapore, which is due to open on August 14.

Other potential qualifiers for Singapore include Annie Tagoe, the England Under-17 Championships 100m and 200m champion, and pole vaulter Katie Byres, who has set three British records already this year.

Javelin duo Freya Jones and Matti Mortimore have also both impressed early on in their careers.

Mortimore broke the British under-15 javelin record five times in 2007 and was the youngest athlete to be included on the World Class Performance Programme while Jones won the England Under-17 Championships and finished fourth in the senior rankings in 2009.

Georgia Peel was ranked first for under-17 3,000m in 2009 following a win at the World School Games in Doha and recently finished second in the Virgin London Mini Marathon.

Jo Jennings, the UK Athletics team leader said: "We are delighted to now announce the full team selection of 22 under-18 athletes for this inaugural Youth Olympic competition.

"Selections have been made to take a competitive team to the trials in Moscow, with the aim of qualifying as many athletes through to the final in Singapore as possible, representing Team GB - an exciting prospect and unique experience only two years out from London 2012."
